481839 Invest In Front End Loading For Successful Turnarounds

CII research reveals that most turnarounds fail to meet management expectations with over 80% of turnarounds experiencing cost overruns and approximately 50% suffering slippages in schedule.

An examination of first quartile performers in turnaround execution reveals that the best practices they implement are substantially similar to those employed by first quartile performers in capital project execution, with particular emphasis on solid front end planning.

This paper will describe the practical application of a phased approach to successful turnaround front end planning, which parallels the traditional stage gate process widely employed for capital project execution. Areas of emphasis will include:

  • Strategic framing of turnaround intent to minimize complexity
  • Turnaround management team selection and development
  • Establishing and maintaining stakeholder alignment
  • Scope definition and control
  • Critical role of project controls
  • Development and implementation of contracting strategies
  • Integration of capital project scope linked to the turnaround event
