Session Abstract

This panel looks at the different ways LGBTQ activism has manifested itself across the United States. Two of the papers use specific case studies to look the experiences of AIDS activists using the ACT UP Oral History Project, and the emergence of queer feminism using the Inside/Out conference of 1989. Another paper looks at recent efforts to recognize LGBTQ history through efforts put forth by the National Parks Service, National Register of Historic Places, and National Historic Landmarks. Another paper challenges ideas about LGBTQ presence and activism in the South by looking at the work of the organization Southerners on New Ground (SONG).
