Session Abstract
This panel examines the meeting of Middle Eastern and "western" conceptions of marriage in Iran and the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. de Groot analyzes texts discussing the politics and practices of marriage by nineteenth century Iranian and European commentators to examine ideas about Middle Eastern marriage, specifically the dynamics of marital intimacy and power relations. Using ethnographic narratives, Othman examines the changes in the marriage patterns of Palestinian immigrants to Milwaukee in the latter part of the 20th century to analyze the ways in which cross-border marriages and intermarriage were altered in a transnational Palestinian community.
