Sound as recursive presence
Because sound transmission and consumption are so intimately related to technology, I question how it conditions our listening practices. Hi Fidelity sound technologies attempt to create machines that leave no trace of their operation: interfaces whose functioning is supposed to be neutral and clean. Playback systems and sound technologies are never neutral, bearing the traces of class, history, power, and social structures.
Although my practice spans over the mediums of sculpture, installation and performance, it always focuses on music and sound perception. I use listening and sound phenomena as a channel to explore notions of space and to play with the idea of sound and listening as “presence”. The ways in which this presence is experienced is at the core of my work and will be the focus of this talk. In my pieces, questions about musicality, control, recursivity and complexity manifest through the creation and interaction with non-traditional sound devices.
