The Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) at the National Gallery of Art has launched a series of initiatives to promote the study of African American art and related fields. The Center is dedicating resources to appointments, fellowships, research associates, and a series of publications and scholarly meetings that both encourage African American art history and the professional development of African American art historians. In addition, the Center seeks to promote these initiatives through collaborative relationships with other cultural institutions and universities. This presentation will describe the various projects underway at CASVA, which includes so far three new books in production, a series of seminars, lectures, colloquy and symposia. In addition, it will highlight some of the distinguished scholars at CASVA as part of this initiative, their work, and their contributions to relevant programs within the National Gallery of Art and with participating museums such as the National Museum of African American History and Culture and Howard University.
