Virtual reality art fuses creativity with technical prowess and a variety of hardware options to create an immersive experience. As VR artists, we are in constant negotiation with our personal sense of expression and how that is shaped by the limitations of hardware and software. Moreover, the work is given to the visitor who controls the navigation and the unfolding of events. The VR experience demands that artists work on many levels of creative concerns including perceptual, experiential, technical, and environmental. VR development and deployment can be messy and complicated if you desire to create the experience from your own imagination. And the payoffs are huge: you can walk in the world of your own imagination, by designing from an infinite empty space to create its architecture, audio design and visitor interaction. VR art exhibition is daunting when galleries do not know how the artwork really works or what it is supposed to look like or how it is supposed to behave. This talk provides some history of VR making, VR exhibiting and VR archiving. I will discuss the process of creating my individual expression for creating VR and how that expression can be translated into a variety of AR, VR, and virtual outputs including CAVE, HMDs, AR, 360 and rapid prototyping for exhibition and archiving.
