Centering the Student Experience: Using Data to Improve Student Learning

How do we know what students are learning? How can we find out if students are meeting our course goals? And how can we design assignments that help students learn? The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning provides a dynamic framework for hearing directly from students to guide syllabi, assignments, and class projects. This session will suggest several strategies to improve student learning in art and art history courses, based on data collected at a variety of colleges and universities. This session will also share the findings of the ongoing research project Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT), demonstrating how small instructional changes can make a difference in student performance, grades, and retention. Participants will leave with strategies and a framework for using data to improve student success.
