S%@t Happens: Happy and Less Happy Accidents

Affiliated Society or Committee Name: Services to Artists Committee
Creative and scholarly practice does not occur in a vacuum. What happens when major life events—job changes, diagnoses, births, deaths—shape one’s practice? In what ways can they make us more innovative? How do we identify when emotional labor adjacent to such life events and circumstances is gendered, and when intersectional issues of race, class, ethnicity, further complicate the narrative? What strategies and coping mechanisms exist or can be developed to shift potential negative impacts to positive forces?

We seek submissions from artists, designers, and academics who would like to share their stories and insights on how events transform one’s work. We hope that these stories will lead to discussion with those in attendance.
