Professional Pathways for the 21st Century: Idea Exchange

Affiliated Society or Committee Name: Education Committee
While the call for greater diversity in the arts and higher education is not new, what pathways lead students from underrepresented communities toward successful careers in these fields? In this context, we define diversity broadly to include race, ability, and identify, as well as socio-economic circumstances that factor into students’ academic and professional success. Given the costs of higher education, the realities of the academic job market, and public perceptions that question the value of a degree in the arts and humanities, how do we assure students that an art education is worth the time, resources, and risks?

Designed by CAA’s Education Committee to stimulate discussion, this session provides a forum to share ideas and information about innovative programs, curricula, and other pre-professional opportunities that help students achieve their post-graduation goals. While we are interested in how to diversify enrollment in arts programs and entry into arts-related professions, we are also curious about approaches that highlight the transferable value of skills cultivated through a visual arts education.

We want to hear about institutions that are creating robust pipelines for students from diverse backgrounds, as well as from students and professionals whose stories provide insight and feedback about such academic initiatives. We invite submissions in the form of proposals or letters of interest, and encourage contributions from community colleges, multi-institutional and cross-sector partnerships, businesses, and other organizations that provide advocacy and support around art education. Selected participants will collaborate with the Education Committee in determining the session’s format and presentation guidelines.
