“Not your grandfather’s art history”: Incorporating the BIPOC Reader into your survey course
Session will present: VirtuallySummary:
This workshop introduces a new digital and open-access resource available on Smarthistory.org. "Not your grandfather's art history: A BIPOC Reader" is an anthology of essays, authored largely by scholars of color, on topics that seek to expand and nuance canonical presentations of art history.
Topics range from the ancient to contemporary periods and are designed to be easily integrated into existing survey curricula.
Participants will learn about the origins of this project, its goals, and data collected from its implementation at Manchester Community College in 2023 in terms of student impact, engagement, retention, and performance.
Case studies will demonstrate how essays can be incorporated into course curricula, with time devoted to brainstorming for participants.
A toolkit will also be presented for how to write successful grant applications.
