Inspired by expanding scholarship on posthumanism that ranges from Cary Wolfe’s focus on bioethics, trans-species communication and cognitive science to Timothy Morton’s “Object-Oriented-Ontology” and “hyperobjects,” to scholars such as Ahmed Elgamal, whose research discusses knowledge discovery in art history and AI art generation, this panel proposes an examination of issues surrounding digital virtuality and posthumanism, and their impacts on reshaping art historical narratives and museum practices. Specifically, we are intrigued by how these advancements challenge conventional narratives and methodologies within the field, presenting novel perspectives for comprehending and engaging with art. For instance, the revolutionary impact of NFTs on the art market and the use of DALL-E in artistic creation prompts inquiries into concepts of authorship, innovation, and the intrinsic nature of art itself. How do virtual museums and digital exhibitions contribute to democratization of art? Papers may delve into case studies, theoretical frameworks that illuminate the potential of understanding of human and non-human interactions. This International Committee aims to facilitate a wide-ranging dialogue on the evolving field of art history in the era of posthumanism, challenging traditional disciplinary boundaries and exploring transdisciplinary and inclusive perspectives on non-human agents and technology in art production, interpretation, and dissemination. We seek contributions from voices representing regions often marginalized or excluded from the dominant art-historical narrative, fostering a more diverse and comprehensive understanding of how organic and technological, biological and digital approaches contribute to the evolving discourse.
