Women Artists in Modern Movements

Session will present: On location
Affiliated Society or Committee Name: William Morris Society in the United States
This interdisciplinary session explores the roles of women artists/art workers in modern movements of all kinds—artistic, social, political, and technological. It seeks to illuminate women’s nuanced and multifaceted contributions to the various ideologies and cultural shifts these movements spurred around the world. From the suffrage movement to the Harlem Renaissance, from the labor movements of the nineteenth century to contemporary environmental activism, women in art and craft have played pivotal roles in bringing about change. Their creative endeavors, organizational efforts, and intellectual contributions were instrumental in shaping the aesthetic, social, and political landscape of their time. We welcome submissions that address a wide array of geographic regions, contexts, and periods. Potential topics may include but are not limited to: the influence of women artists on avant-garde movements; feminist art practices and activism; women's contributions to cultural exchange and cross-cultural dialogue; intersectionality in women’s art movements; rediscovery and reevaluation of overlooked women artists; and the role of women in shaping art education and institutions.

Financial support may be available from the William Morris Society in the United States for a speaker without institutional funding. If you would like to be considered for funding, please notify the session chair when you submit your paper proposal.
