Networks, Solidarities and Intersections: Representations of Black, African and Asian Historical and Contemporary Space
Session will present: On locationFollowing recent survey exhibitions and publications focused on Afro-Asian art, including Joan Kee’s The Geometries of Afro Asia: Art beyond Solidarity (2023), this session will invite participants to highlight artists who provide multiple points of access through ‘history-from-below’ perspectives on migratory and plantation labor, global to neighborhood economies, and community or political coalitions that have long connected Black, African, and Asian diasporas across North America, the Caribbean, and Asian and African regions.
In a present that has diverged from the ambitions of the Afro-Asian world-making that emerged through the Bandung Conference (1955) and Non-Aligned Movement (1961), this session seeks paper presentations that propose, examine, and respond critically and creatively to the following: what can historical and contemporary visual cultures tell us or belie about transracial ‘stand-ins,’ Black, African, and Asian diasporic solidarities, and survival economies under post-colonial re-ordering, marginalization, and erasure?
