Trophy
My work centers on my identification with the furry community—a subculture in which participants create animal personas which they embody through costuming, artwork and roleplaying. While nominally centered on an interest in anthropomorphic animals, furry has also long been a home for queer, trans and neurodivergent people. I have been exploring my relationship to this identity through my art for nearly fifteen years.
Furry is about using fantasy to recontextualize reality. I find this world to be overstimulating, alienating and oppressive. But these conditions are also what lends my work its strength. When divergent desires and identities are labeled as wrong or dangerous they are also granted power. In a moment where what is normal is steering us toward obliteration, cultures on the margins might offer pathways toward not only survival, but joy and liberation too.
