Inviting Everyone In

Halim Lee , Boston University
As a UX designer at Samsung Electronics, I worked with cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and flexible displays for seven years. While these innovations often evoked a sense of wonder, I became increasingly aware of a disconnect between technological sophistication and the emotional resonance that fosters genuine attachment. This realization led me to shift my focus toward teaching and independent creative practice.

In my current work, I approach creative coding as both a pedagogical method and a manifesto-driven tool. I use it to inspire students to step beyond their comfort zones, critically engage with computational systems, and discover joy through experimentation. Rather than treating code as something to passively adopt, I frame it as a medium for sparking insight, building community, and nurturing relationships.

Through storytelling, humor, and accessible language, I foster inclusive learning environments where even students without prior coding experience feel empowered to explore and create. This approach encourages students, particularly those new to computation, to examine the underlying structures and ideologies of digital systems and to develop their own creative and critical voices within them.
