Navigating Uncertainty: Art Markets in Peripheral and Global South Regions
Session will present: On locationAffiliated Society or Committee Name: The International Art Market Studies Association
In an era marked by post-globalization dynamics, economic downturns, political instability, and heightened societal tensions, the art markets of peripheral regions and the Global South encounter profound challenges. Fragile infrastructures, diminished institutional support, and volatile local economies render these markets particularly vulnerable to external shocks. Nevertheless, these adversities have also catalyzed significant innovation, resilience, and the creation of alternative frameworks for artistic exchange and value production.
This panel invites scholars, curators, market professionals, and researchers to submit proposals that critically examine the dynamics shaping these contexts. Contributions are encouraged to explore how local actors are redefining strategies, forging new alliances, and proposing alternative notions of success, thereby contributing to a more inclusive and diversified global art ecosystem.
We particularly welcome submissions that:
- Present case studies of regional or local market adaptations;
- Analyze the impact of digitalization and online platforms;
- Reflect on emerging forms of patronage, collecting, and institutional support;
- Investigate artistic practices that engage with or resist economic and political crises;
- Offer theoretical reflections on the redefinition of value, visibility, and success beyond traditional Western-centric frameworks.
By bringing together diverse perspectives, this session seeks to deepen understanding of the innovative responses developed in peripheral markets and to propose new models for a more equitable global art system.
