Asian Art Is Cool!: Strategies for Enhancing Student Engagement

Session will present: On location

The context for the panel recognizes an undeniable general decline in interest in art history, along with arts and humanities overall, at the undergraduate level. Additionally, factors such as developments in AI, students’ limited preparedness and interest in reading, competing demands on student time, and so forth, pose obstacles to engaging and teaching students. But, Asian art—in its sheer diversity of form and content, of material and purpose—can recapture the imagination and light the way to see the world anew. Furthermore, frequent references to Asian art and architecture in popular culture (video games, movies, etc) present further opportunities for students to connect with art history.

In this roundtable, we will present some strategies and techniques for spurring enthusiasm and interest before leading a discussion with the audience to brainstorm more ways to enhance student engagement. Round table participants will each give a brief 10-minute presentation, before it is opened up for general discussion.
