Once a novel genome has been sequenced and assembled, the next step for the researcher is to study the nature of the proteins that are encoded by the genes predicted to exist by a gene-call, to understand the function of the protein transcripts and to study how this impacts on the physiology and behaviour of the organism. The EBI provides a suite of tools to enable the prediction of protein function and to perform analyses of the spread of protein families represented within the proteome of the organism. The use of InterProScan to identify protein familes, domain and active sites will be demonstrated, and how this information can then be used to predict function using both the Gene Ontology and annotation transfer from well-studied model organisms in UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot will be discussed.
