Genome Annotation Resources at the EBI

The European Bioinformatics Institute exists to deliver freely available data and to provide bioinformatics services to the scientific community . This workshop will examine a number of these resources and look at ways they can be used by groups sequencing and studying both novel and known genomes. Resources covered will include 1. The Ensembl project (http://www.ensembl.org)which provides high quality, integrated annotation on chordate and selected eukaryotic genomes. 2. Ensembl Genomes (http://www.ensemblgenomes.org) consists of five sub-portals (for bacteria, protists, fungi, plants and invertebrate metazoa) designed to complement the genomes available in Ensembl. 3. InterProScan, a widely used tool which allows the classification of a proteome into protein families, which recognizes biologically relevant protein domains, binding and active sites and links to the underlying InterPro database (www.ebi.ac.uk/interpro) to provide more detailed annotation. 4. Gene Ontology (www.geneontology.org), demonstrating how GO terms can be automatically propagated onto novel genomes, allowing a functional classification using a GO Slim. 5. UniProtKB protein sequence database (www.uniprot.org) rule-based system for the prediction of protein function manually curated information from well-studied model organisms. The EBI offers advanced bioinformatics training to scientists at all levels, from PhD students to independent investigators. We will briefly introduce attendees to freely-available online training modules which will explain these resources in more detail and show new users how to get the best results from them.
