Wheat Genome Assessment and Reassembly
Wheat Genome Assessment and Reassembly
Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is the second most important food crop in the world and its production is predicted to keep rising in to keep up with an ever growing demand. The most effective way of increasing wheat production is by developing elite cultivars with greater productivity and resistance to environmental stress. The generation of a reference genome is a major step towards genomics based crop breeding programs. Recently, the International wheat genome sequencing consortium (IWGSC) sequenced and assembled data for individual chromosome arms (The International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium, 2014).
We have used the data released by the IWGSC to produce a new assembly of the wheat genome and to determine the syntenic blocks shared with Brachypodium distachyon. We used this information to sort and orient the contigs into syntenic scaffolds. Here, we present a comparison between the public reference and our wheat genome reassembly.
