Shrimp Epigenomics
The workshop will inform about 'THE SHRIMP EPIGENOME (shrimpENCODE) PROJECT' and research proposed to test the hypothesis that Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrotic Disease (AHPND), also called Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS), is an epigenetic disease. AHPND/EMS is caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains that contain a plasmid with a transposon flanking the insect-related pirA and pirB endotoxins. EMS is causing billions of dollars in losses to the shrimp industry worldwide. Through shrimpENCODE, we will test the hypothesis that AHPND/EMS is caused by epigenetic changes caused by the interaction of the genome with environmental stressors [endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs, such as the herbicide Glyphosate and metal cadmium), feed ingredients (antibiotic Glyphosate, animal parts] and bacteria present in the sediment of shrimp ponds and mangroves wetlands. We will address the need for (a) more basic research on the shrimp genome and environmental epigenomics, and (b) new ecological and epidemiological tools to help control emerging bacterial diseases in light of climate change, and conserve penaeid shrimp populations throughout their natural range to address food safety and food security issues of concern.
