NCBI’s Genome Workbench is a desktop application to view, analyze, and interpret genome sequence data. A genome may be loaded and the annotations visualized in the context of both publicly available sequence data and user-supplied private data. Annotations from different annotation groups, or of different assembly versions, are easily compared when available. Analytical tools available within Genome Workbench include BLAST, several nucleotide and/or protein aligners  (ClustalW, MUSCLE, SPLIGN), WindowMasker, and a phylogenetic tree builder. Preparing private sequence data within Genome WorkBench for direct submission to GenBank will be an option available in the near future. The different views and applications of Genome Workbench will be presented. Genome Workbench is based on NCBI’s C++ toolkit, is supported on Windows 2000/XP, Linux, MacOS X, and UNIX operating systems, and is available without restriction from NCBI at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/tools/gbench/.
