NCBI hosts a wide variety of databases and associated computational tools and is the largest repository of biological data in the world. Next-generation sequencing has enabled researchers to perform genomic and transcriptomic sequencing at rates that were unimaginable in the past.
This huge increase in DNA sequence data presents new challenges for the submission, annotation and analysis pipelines. Information will be provided about efforts underway to streamline data submission, automate validation and provide search and analysis tools for rapid data access and visualization across the multitude of genomes. Several new resources have been created at NCBI to handle genome-associated data: BioProject, BioSample, Genome, and Genome Assembly. Understanding the relationships between various data types will help navigating across genome resources and finding the datasets relevant to your research project.
