Dramatic natural phenotypic and genetic variation is present in biofuel grasses and related model systems. We are utilizing RNA sequencing and exome capture in switchgrass; and whole-genome resequencing, RNA-seq, and genotyping-by-sequencing in maize to characterize genetic variation. Diversity analysis is providing valuable information on genome content, sequence diversity, and relationships among genetic collections. QTL mapping and genome-wide association studies are revealing novel candidate genes for productivity and quality traits. Resources and research highlights will be discussed.
