The development and implementation of Breeding4Rice, a breeding information management system, is one of the objectives of IRRI’s Transforming Rice Breeding (TRB) project which is funded by Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. The purpose of the TRB project is to increase the efficiency and genetic gain in IRRI’s irrigated breeding program by using modern tools and methods.

The development of Breeding4Rice is based on the principle that a properly designed information management system is fundamental component for any breeding program aiming breeding efficiency, targeted mission goals and management structures that ensure data ownership and continuation of operation in long-term. A breeding information management system has to match the program’s variety and trait development structures and operational processes service structure, and needs to be flexible enough to allow tailoring for local requirements of a particular pipeline.

At IRRI, we are establishing an integrated, user-friendly information management system equipped with all the necessary tools for data management so that reliable information is available for the decision makers in real-time. The outcome is Breeding4Rice, developed using modern web technologies and is deployed to a cloud infrastructure.
