Increased access to large-scale compute processing and storage has greatly enabled investigations leveraging population genomics and the genomic sciences in general. Now the opportunity turns toward expediting the organization of multiple data types, formulating scientific questions and hypotheses, modeling the data to test those hypotheses and disseminating the results through reproducible workflows and publication. In this presentation, we will use a plant microbe interaction example to illustrate how large genomic datasets along with diverse physiological data types can be quickly modeled to develop new hypotheses on interacting community members. We will highlight the use of recent cyberinfrastructure projects, including KBase as a platform to transition our emphasis in the genomic sciences from large compute to cognitive reasoning and result dissemination.
