2847The National Plant Genome Initiative -- Research Challenges and Resource Needs in Phenotyping, Cyberinfrastructure & Bioinformatics, and the Microbiome
The National Plant Genome Initiative (NPGI) is a national program coordinated by the Interagency Working Group on Plant Genomics (IWGPG) under the Committee on Science of the National Science and Technology Council. The NPGI goal is to develop a basic knowledge of the structures and functions of plant genomes, to translate this knowledge to a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of economically important plants and plant processes, and thus accelerate basic discovery and innovation in economically important plants. Since 1998, the NPGI has been a leading advocate for openly accessible data and genetic resources, interagency coordination, rigorous and competitive scientific peer review, and public-private international partnerships.
The NPGI workshop is a forum for the crop genomics and genetics research community to meet with IWGPG agencies, e.g. NSF, DOE, USDA, and USAID, to discuss key research challenges and critical resource needs for advancing plant science research in the United States and for its translation to agriculture. Seven leaders from the community will give 10 minute presentations to stimulate and solicit community input in three target areas: high-throughput phenotyping, the crop plant microbiome, and cyberinfrastructure and bioinformatic support followed by community discussion.
All are welcome to attend and participate!
