2851Tripal Database Network and Initiatives
Tripal is a toolkit for construction of online genome research community databases (http://tripal.info), and is currently in use by a variety of plant and animal genome databases. It uses the GMOD Chado database schema, and Drupal, a popular content management system (CMS). It is currently suited for display of genomic, genetic and breeding data, although it supports integration with all of Chado. It is designed to reduce costs associated with development of online biological databases to allow a single group with no computer programming expertise to publish biological data online in a browseable format. It also supports larger communities with programming expertise through an Application Programming Interface (API) and editable data templates to allow for site-specific customizations. These customizations can be shared with other Tripal users, particularly in the form of extension modules, which can be added to any site. This workshop provides an introduction to Tripal, usage examples, information about planned developments, and talks from community database developers.
