Session Proposal: An Opening Arctic: Maritime Access, Ecosystem Risks, and Socio-Political Dimensions (AGU25)

GC023
An Opening Arctic: Maritime Access, Ecosystem Risks, and Socio-Political Dimensions

Session ID#: 247278

Session Description:
Rapid environmental change in the Arctic is reshaping sea ice dynamics and transforming maritime accessibility. This session invites interdisciplinary research on the growing navigability and accessibility of Arctic waters and its wide-ranging implications. We seek contributions that explore emerging shipping routes and human activities, environmental and socio-economic impacts on coastal and indigenous communities, geopolitical and regulatory challenges, and conservation strategies. We welcome diverse methodological approaches, including climate and traffic simulations, remote sensing, geospatial analysis, observational studies, and community-based research. By bringing together scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders, this session aims to foster a mutual understanding of Arctic accessibility, including its potential benefits, such as new economic corridors, and its associated risks, including pollution, habitat disturbance, and cultural disruption.
