Building a More Complete Representation of Methane Dynamics Across Earth's Ecosystems

Session Description:
Accurately measuring and predicting methane (CH4) fluxes is crucial for enhancing modeling capabilities to respond effectively to climate and land-use change. However, our incomplete understanding of CH4 dynamics between the biosphere, pedosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems has led to large uncertainties. This session aims to bridge connections and evaluate differences in CH4 dynamics through the terrestrial-aquatic continuum and Earth’s Critical Zone across a variety of climates and ecosystems. We encourage submissions that (1) explore CH4 production and oxidation pathways, including CH4 uptake, via biogeochemical or microbiome analyses, (2) identify soil-vegetation interactions using biogeochemical and physiological studies across a range of hydrologic conditions, (3) characterize the response of CH4 dynamics to climate and land use change disturbances, (4) develop methods for scaling plot-level observations in CH4 dynamics to the ecosystem or landscape levels, and (5) examine the impact of observational errors and model uncertainties on CH4 fluxes.
