Navigating Complex Risk in the 21st Century

Session Description:
The 21st century is defined by deep interdependence, crossing Earth and space environments, social and technological systems, and the physical and human sciences. As complexity reshapes risk landscapes for socio-ecological-technological systems, there is an urgent need to adapt our ways of characterizing risk to include relationships between hazards/infrastructures/society and the emergent properties they give rise to as well as incorporating driving or contextual socio-political factors.
This session invites contributions to any aspects of risk: natural hazards, exposure, and vulnerability, especially frontier research that examines interactions that alter risk. We refer to this as complex risk science.
As complex risk science cannot be achieved through traditional, discipline-bound approaches, requiring different forms of scientific organization, we encourage contributions that envision or describe cross-institutional, adaptive research structures capable of integrating across domains and evolving methodologically alongside the problems it studies.
We especially welcome integrative work bridging Earth and space science with socio-technical systems.
