Enhancing Multiscale Air-Sea Interaction Science with Uncrewed Systems (UxS) and Integrated Observations

Session Description:
The ocean and atmosphere interact through exchanges of heat, mass, momentum, and gases at air-sea interface, driving variability across a wide range of scales, often leading to extreme events such as deep convection, marine heatwaves, tropical and extratropical cyclones, and basin-scale ENSO events with global impacts. While traditional observing systems provide high-quality in situ data, their limited spatial coverage and inability to sample extreme environments constrain our understanding.
Recent advances in UxS, including uncrewed surface, subsurface, and aerial vehicles, offer new capabilities to observe air-sea interactions across diverse conditions, from hurricanes to marginal ice zones. We invite presentations on the development and use of these platforms to study physical and biogeochemical processes, and studies leveraging their data to improve understanding of upper-ocean and lower-atmospheric dynamics. Contributions incorporating traditional in-situ observations, modeling, satellite remote sensing, or laboratory studies that help characterize multiscale processes and challenge/inform UxS observations are strongly encouraged.
