SM028
Multi-scale investigations of fundamental plasma processes by in-situ observations and simulations

Session ID#: 72663

Session Description:
The geospace is composed of various regions, from the foreshock to the ionosphere. The mechanisms that couple these different regions include magnetic reconnection, waves/turbulence, velocity-shear-driven vortices, and field aligned currents. These physical processes often occur at kinetic scales (e.g., field-particle interactions and particle acceleration). Their effects, however, have implications at the meso- to global-scales of the system (e.g., plasma transport and mixing, magnetospheric storms and substorms). High-resolution in-situ observations made by multi-spacecraft (e.g., MMS, Cluster, THEMIS, Van Allen Probes, and Arase) and kinetic simulations provide us understanding of the microphysics, while combination of ground and space measurements, spacecraft conjunctions and numerical fluid approaches help us understanding the implications at larger scales. This session welcomes studies on our current understanding of these multi-scale plasma processes, using observations, simulations or a combination of them.
