MR016
Experimental and Theoretical Advancements in Shale Mechanics

Session ID#: 78450

Session Description:
Shale is a multi-component composite of minerals and organic matter. The compositional and structural complexity, as well as exposure to chemically-reactive, high pressure, high temperature conditions overcomplicates the mechanical behavior of shale making it difficult to design for various engineering operations such as drilling, completion, stimulation and production in unconventional hydrocarbon resource plays. This session provides a platform for technical exchange and discussion of recent experimental and theoretical research advancements in laboratory characterization, theoretical modeling and field applications of shale. Typical topics include, but are not limited to, laboratory testing and characterization of shale at different scales (such as nanometer- and micrometer-sized indentation, scratch, pillar and beam tests, core plug tests, polyaxial tests, and CT/SEM- scanning), analytical and numerical modeling of shale mechanics problems, field operations in shale formations, as well as the related field-scale modeling and design work.
