Linking education and research communities in Earth and Space Sciences: International trends, collaboration and impact
Session ID#: 82033
Session Description:
Developing links between research and education is important for maximizing the impact of Earth and Space Sciences and for nurturing a global geoliterate community. Initiatives involving research, education and public engagement abound, building communities that bring educators, researchers and those with dual interests together is, however, not always straightforward. While many researchers are engaged in activities at national and international levels, educators may focus on projects primarily shaped by institutional and national priorities. In this session, we investigate the challenges and opportunities of advancing research-education synergies in Earth and Space Sciences. We focus on success stories showcasing international trends in bringing researchers and educators together for building academic communities. Ways of fostering collaborations and evidencing impact within and beyond national borders will be highlighted. In particular, we explore how international learned societies and professional bodies may provide strategic leadership in building more inclusive communities and effectively addressing evolving societal needs.
