Structure, sedimentation, and dynamics of fold-and-thrust belts and associated basins on Earth and other planets
Session ID#: 83361
Session Description:
Delineating the structure and sedimentation styles of fold-and-thrust belts and their associated basins enables us to uncover the growth history of orogenic systems and to better understand the lithospheric dynamics over multiple time scales. New geological and geophysical datasets coupled with recent progress in analog and numerical modeling are converging to provide more robust interpretations on some aspects of fold-and-thrust belts such as critical taper model while fueling debates on others such as out-of-sequence deformation. This session aims to provide a platform for recent discoveries in the structure, deposition, and geodynamics of fold-and-thrust belts and their associated basins in order to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the evolution of contractional orogenic belts on Earth and other planets. We encourage submissions that focus on this topic by using various methods, including but not limited to field mapping, geochronology, geochemistry, thermochronology, magnetostratigraphy, seismic interpretation, geomorphology, morphotectonics, analog/numerical modeling, among many others.
