Rapid Urbanization and Agroecosystems: Dynamics and Risk Assessments
Rapid Urbanization and Agroecosystems: Dynamics and Risk Assessments
Session ID#: 120670
Session Description:
Recent rapid global urbanization and economic development have significantly impacted agroecosystems across urban, peri-urban, and rural regions. Land use and land cover changes (LULCC) increase the risk of flood, coastal inundation, wildfire, and water and air pollution in both the agricultural sector and urban communities under a changing climate. Because of the multi-dimensional interaction of agroecological, sociocultural, and regional climate conditions associated with natural hazards over the landscape, novel interdisciplinary approaches are required to assess associated risks for impact projection and for development of risk mitigation policies. This interdisciplinary session will cover subjects related to rapid urbanization and agroecosystem risks. These includes LCLUC, extreme events (e.g., storms and fires on top of the COVID-19 pandemic), human-biophysical interactions in agricultural ecosystems, resilience of agroecosystems, food security and disaster risk reduction, adaptation, and mitigation.
