Innovative approaches in geoscience education via university-K12 partnerships

Session ID#: 120853

Session Description:
K-12 curricula typically do not emphasize geoscience as a core science comparable to chemistry, biology, or physics and most U.S. states do not require any Earth Sciences for graduation. Thus, students entering colleges may be less aware of geoscience as a discipline and potential career path. Meanwhile, community science platforms have grown, allowing K-12 students to participate in hands-on geoscience research more easily. This session will highlight innovative collaborations between college/university scientists and K-12 teachers and students that work toward making geoscience a more diverse, inclusive, and accessible field for the next generation. Topics include, but are not limited to: community science projects, outreach projects, and service learning projects. We welcome formal research outcomes of university/K-12 collaborations and qualitative descriptions of novel or impactful collaborations. Sharing these outcomes from a broad array of researchers can provide more foundation for continued integration of geoscience education into the K-12 system.
