Inspiring, educating and empowering the next generation of Earth and space scientists: A transdisciplinary conversation
Session ID#: 122904
Session Description:
The AGU is committed to shaping the future of Earth and space sciences (ESS) through educating the next generation of scientists. Recognizing the need for ESS to be taught throughout the educational experience and making sure that students have access to accurate information on evolution and climate change are important for achieving this strategic vision. As part of this effort, the AGU has recently updated its position statements on the importance of embedding ESS in all parts of formal and informal education and of teaching evolution and climate change as central elements of education for all. These position statements are used by a wide range of stakeholders, including the media and policymakers, and they form the basis for pronouncing the AGU’s stance on policy issues.
In this session, we will take a transdisciplinary approach to exploring the challenges and opportunities of inspiring, educating and empowering the next generation of scientists – in light of but not exclusively limited to the updated AGU position statements. We will host panel discussions for our diverse science, science education and policy communities, featuring US and international perspectives and cultural experiences. In particular, we will examine the societal implications as well as the diversity, equity and inclusion dimensions across science and science education. We will also investigate strategic leadership and community responses beyond the AGU’s stances by facilitating conversations among panelists from international and professional organizations.
