ED011
Creating Authentic STEM Experiences in Schools to Meet the Challenges Facing Our Planet

Session ID#: 156642

Session Description:
Students are bombarded with complex information from a variety of sources relating to the global challenges facing humanity. Educators create curriculum materials and authentic learning experiences to equip students with the knowledge and skills to filter, analyse, evaluate scientific data and then formulate appropriate, informed action to meet these challenges. The challenges are complex and multi-layered, demanding an interdisciplinary lens to understand the problems. STEM-related fields of learning are increasingly taught in an integrated manner, linking fundamental knowledge and tools of the STEM fields with the non-STEM fields, such as literacy, visual arts, humanities, and entrepreneurship. Experiential approaches to learning are critical in generating authentic learning and problem-solving skills. The complexity of these programs often leads to collaboration with organisations outside the school environment. Session participants will present on classroom and out of classroom curriculum, partnerships, student-led projects, makerspace education, and programs that are interdisciplinary.
