Creating and Sustaining Safety and Community at Scientific Field Stations, Field Camps, Marine Laboratories, and Research Vessels

Session ID#: 158370

Session Description:
Fieldwork should yield positive and transformative experiences for everyone in the geosciences, especially students and early career researchers. Unfortunately, the same elements that make field experiences transformative for some (e.g. remote settings that offer new and unfamiliar experiences, landscapes, and conditions with a small group of people) can act as barriers to others. This can enable unsafe and damaging experiences to loom over fieldwork, significantly and detrimentally affecting one’s career. These barriers and their resulting consequences are often larger and more prevalent for historically marginalized groups and include persistent, unchecked micro-aggressions, discrimination, harassment, and assault based on race, gender, sex, sexual orientation, disability, and socio-economic background. As a growing body of research reveals these risks and inequities, field stations, field camps, marine laboratories, research vessels, and independent organizations are launching community-driven efforts to promote safety, diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and justice in field settings, informed from evidence-based practices.

We invite abstract submissions that present research on the subject or highlight such efforts at field stations, field camps, marine laboratories, and research vessels. Submissions could cover topics such as, but not limited to, promoting physical and mental safety and well-being, community building for current and future researchers, and best practices of responding to reports of code of conduct violations.
