Extreme Weather and Climate in Urban Areas, Their Social Impacts, and Mitigation
Session ID#: 156695
Session Description:
Urban areas interact with large-scale weather systems and associated extremes, including storms and heatwaves. However, our understanding of extreme weather and climate in urban areas, as well as, their social impacts on human health, energy, infrastructure, and security is still limited. Advanced understanding of climate-driven sustainable innovative actions can help find cost-effective solutions for cities.
Using integrating analysis, measurement, numerical modeling tools and machine learning/AI techniques , this session seeks contributions to advance our understanding of 1) extreme weather and climate processes in urban areas, in particular, how they interact with urbanization and the global warming; 2) impacts of weather and climate extremes including (but not limited to) human health issues, urban air quality, energy supply, urban hydrological cycle etc.; 3) mitigation and adaptation strategies to future change in weather extremes for cities; and 4) actionable, interdisciplinary and cost-effective urban sustainability solutions for social, ecological and technological urban disruptions that can decrease urban hydrometeorological stress.
