Geologic Carbon Storage

Session ID#: 157988

Session Description:
Geologic carbon storage (GCS) is a viable technique to safely and permanently store carbon dioxide (CO2) that has been separated and captured from industrial sources (e.g., coal- and natural gas-fired power plants, oil refineries, cement plants, bioenergy production facilities) or the atmosphere in deep geologic formations.  GCS can serve an important role to help meet aggressive greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets to stem rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations and reduce global warming impacts. Ensuring safe and long-term GCS in different subsurface settings requires robust site characterization, appropriately designed and managed injection operations, and efficient/effective monitoring during and post CO2 injection. This work requires thoughtful consideration of geologic, geochemical, hydrological, and geophysical processes and techniques. Worldwide efforts to demonstrate and deploy industrial-scale geologic carbon storage and/or utilization afford an opportunity to pose many research questions linking scientific and industrial best practices. We solicit abstracts on research exploring the applications of geologic, geochemical, hydrological, and geophysical science for improved characterization, operation, monitoring, and management of GCS projects; topics including laboratory, computational, and field-scale studies of GCS are invited.
