Pliocene-Pleistocene low-latitude weathering, cooling, and sea-level change: Advances in the Sunda Shelf and its adjacent regions

Session ID#: 158115

Session Description:
The Earth has been cooling throughout Pliocene-Pleistocene epochs, leading to the development of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets at ~2.7 Ma. Since then, the cooling has been punctuated by recurring ice ages, i.e., alternating between interglacial and glacial stages. The emergence of the low-latitude Southeast Asian islands (called “Maritime Continent”) might have driven this cooling trend through intensifying the chemical weathering of basaltic silicates, increasing atmospheric CO2 consumption, and thus cooling the planet subsequently by forming the ice sheets. Located in the western part of the Maritime Continent, the Sunda Shelf was exposed and submerged by the repeated influence of eustatic sea-level fluctuations, allowing the development of large paleo-drainage systems and widespread marine vegetations during sea-level lowstand periods. The Sunda Shelf is the largest tropical shelf in the world and has been very tectonically stable since the late Miocene. The shelf is therefore particularly well-suited for reconstructing low-latitude weathering, sea-level change, and carbon cycling evolution over the past 5 Ma. This session is expected to gather multiple time-scale study approaches on the chemical weathering, paleo-drainage system, and eustatic sea-level fluctuation strongly associated with the Pliocene-Pleistocene Maritime Continent evolution, especially on the Sunda Shelf and its adjacent regions. Studies on short time scales since the late Pleistocene and the present-day are also welcomed.
