Irrigation and Climate Change: Monitoring and Modeling Plant Water Stress for Sustainable Irrigation Management
Irrigation and Climate Change: Monitoring and Modeling Plant Water Stress for Sustainable Irrigation Management
Session ID#: 159507
Session Description:
Irrigation is critical to sustain agricultural productivity in dry/semi-dry environments under climate change, accounting for ~72% of total water withdrawals from surface water and groundwater globally. If combined with effective public policy, efficient irrigation can relieve water scarcity, improve farmers’ economic return, and have positive impacts on environmental sustainability. Improved monitoring and modeling plant water stress in the soil-plant-atmosphere-continuum (SPAC) for efficient irrigation decision-making are urgently needed in both academia and industry. We invite submissions focusing on: (1) developing scalable and cost-effective approaches for data collection to track water status in the agroecosystem; (2) plant water stress monitoring and forecasting based on stress from both soil water deficit (low soil moisture) and atmospheric aridity (high vapor pressure deficit) in the SPAC; (3) systematic model-data integration to support irrigation decision-making for improved farming practice, economic returns, and water sustainability; (4) irrigation water use (blue water footprint) quantification to understand irrigation behaviors and irrigation impacts on regional climates; and (5) public policies that lead to decreased water use as irrigation efficiencies increase.
