From the tachocline through the convection zone to the photosphere and into the heliosphere: solar processes responsible for magnetic activity
From the tachocline through the convection zone to the photosphere and into the heliosphere: solar processes responsible for magnetic activity
Session ID#: 160837
Session Description:
Solar activity is the direct Consequence Of Fields and Flows in the Interior and Exterior of the Sun (COFFIES). High-fidelity measurements of flows and fields on the surface and below for multiple cycles from the SDO/HMI, SOHO/MDI and GONG instruments, along with new capabilities in theory, modeling, and analysis, finally allow us to bridge the gaps in observed and inferred measurements, fine-scale models, and global simulations. This is the ideal time for transformative breakthroughs in understanding of solar magnetic activity, which affects our vulnerable technological society, by addressing questions such as: What drives large-scale plasma-flows? How do these flows interact with magnetic fields to create varying solar activity cycles? What causes the large-scale organization of active region emergence pattern? How does solar variability influence conditions in the heliosphere? We welcome contributions from the solar and heliospheric community, and from the coordinated and complementary COFFIES DRIVE Science Center and 2019-LWS-FST#4.
