Advances in Continuous Development and Continuous Deployment of Earth System Models

Session ID#: 161364

Session Description:
Earth system models are composed of component systems (e.g., atmosphere, ocean, ice, wave, land, aerosols, dynamical core, coupling infrastructure, and data assimilation) that can be connected to form model applications for predictions of weather, climate, and Earth’s other subsystems. To support community development, the entire modeling suite needs to follow the community development paradigm, i.e. open-development repositories with proper documentation integrated with Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Deployment (CD) pipelines for testing and evaluation.  In this session, we call for cutting-edge advances to establish CI/CD frameworks and their applications to improve Earth system models, including but not limited to, development of automated CI/CD pipelines on cloud and on-premise HPCs, best practices for code/data management and dissemination, and successes and lessons learned from using CI/CD frameworks to accelerate community model development and deployment.
