ED018
Increasing Diversity in the Earth and Space Science Workforce

Session ID#: 161460

Session Description:
Efforts to increase the diversity of those engaged in Earth and Space Science, from undergraduate students to industry, has been ongoing for decades.  Despite positive intentions, traditional education has not  adequately supported students from underrepresented backgrounds or prepared them to enter the workforce. Students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds often do not have access to opportunities and resources to prepare them for graduate school or the technical workforce. The causes are many including lack of hands-on lab experiences, knowledgeable faculty, authentic research projects, and internships, as well as lack of access to technical centers and connections to industry. We invite papers to share programs and innovations that highlight diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility programs that help support access to training and preparation for these careers. Presentations may be from funders, program leaders, students, and alumni to share challenges, successes, and visions for how to better prepare a new generation to work in Earth and Space Science Exploration.
