Costs, potential and performance of CO2 capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies

Session ID#: 161813

Session Description:
CO2 capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies are projected to a play significant role in carbon management in deep decarbonization scenarios. It is imperative to evaluate the costs, potential and performance associated with these technologies especially under specific spatial and temporal contexts. For instance, the literature suggests that CO2 utilization technologies may be compatible with net-zero targets only when they are interlinked with low-carbon energy and accompanied with improved engineering processes. Similarly, geologic CO2 storage via enhanced oil recovery leads to tradeoffs of revenue generation with additional CO2 emissions which may counteract the sequestration. As such, there is substantial variability in the environmental and economic metrics associated with CCUS platforms. This session invites abstracts from analysts of CCUS using diverse suites of techniques: geologic potential assessment, integrated assessment modeling, life-cycle assessment, cost-benefit analysis, and others. Case-studies focusing on regional/temporal contexts and global analyses are both welcome.
