Magmatic and hydrothermal ore systems: mineral resources for carbon neutrality
Session ID#: 162733
Session Description:
Adopting carbon-neutral technologies strongly depends on our ability to supply essential mineral commodities (e.g. Au, Cu, Co, Li, Mo, Ni, Os, Pd, Pt, Re, Sn, W, rare-earth elements). These elements are primarily sourced from ore systems that are directly or indirectly related to magmatic and/or hydrothermal ore deposits, including porphyry-epithermal Cu-Mo-Au, Fe-oxide Cu-Au, Carlin-type Au, lithium, granite-hosted Sn–(W), carbonatite and alkaline igneous complex-hosted REE, and orthomagmatic Ni-Cu-PGE deposits. Despite their societal importance, canonical models for the formation of these ore systems remain vigorously debated, which ultimately limit our ability to predict and explore for economic mineral occurrences. This session encourages studies that examine ore forming processes contributing towards a fundamental understanding of metal enrichment processes. We welcome investigations addressing the genesis of ore systems through the lens of field studies, petrology, geochemistry, experimental and theoretical work, as well as implications for exploration strategies leading to new discoveries.
